Frequently Asked Questions
How is body fat percentage calculated?
This calculator uses the U.S. Navy method, which estimates body fat from circumference measurements (neck, waist, and hip for women). It's a practical at-home method with reasonable accuracy.
What is a healthy body fat percentage?
For men: 10–20% is healthy (athletes 6–13%). For women: 18–28% is healthy (athletes 14–20%). Essential fat minimums are 2–5% for men and 10–13% for women.
Is the Navy method accurate?
It has a margin of error of ~3–4%, similar to skinfold calipers. DEXA scans are more accurate but expensive. The Navy method is the best free at-home option.
How does body fat differ from BMI?
BMI doesn't distinguish muscle from fat. A muscular person can have 'overweight' BMI with low body fat. Body fat percentage is a more direct measure of composition.
